EMOTION DRIVEN vs. SPIRIT LED

As a Christian, there is an understanding that we are SUPPOSE to be SPIRIT LED… However, if we are truly honest, sometimes we let our EMOTIONS do the talking.

I remember a time with my dad (who is one of the MOST Spirit Led man that I have ever met) let his EMOTIONS DRIVE him to do something that I still “guilt trip” him about almost 27 years later… I was about 6 years old and I had played with our hamster a little too roughly. The hamster ended up dying and my dad had to bury him for us. I went out to help my dad and offered him my knife to help dig a hole (a knife that my grandpa gave me BTW…). Well, my dad who was a little upset with me b/c he had previously warned me about playing roughly with the hamster (which I was training to be a super ninja hamster…) took the knife that I was offering and threw it in the field next to where we were standing. That knife was gone, never to be seen again…

My dad had let his EMOTIONS DRIVE him to do something that was totally out of nature for him. Oh yes, he probably had good reasons for doing what he did. I should of been more careful, I should of listen to the first time, yes, it was ultimately my fault for the hamster’s death… but, my dad immediately felt remorse realizing that he let his EMOTIONS get the best of him, and neglected to be SPIRITUALLY LED at that moment.

And that is where WE come in. How often do we let our EMOTIONS get the best of us? Instead of relying on God and allow HIM to LEAD us SPIRITUALLY, we often go with our EMOTIONS and do what feels “right” at the moment.

Our emotions will have us ACT out of ANGER, PRIDE, LUST, GREED, and so many more DESTRUCTIVE behaviors.

Why do some many Christian Men (and women) fall to the sin of PORN? Because instead of being Spiritually Led at the moment, they allow an EMOTION DRIVEN LUST to take over. Why do we YELL at our kids, get road rage, and mad at those close to us? Because we have given in to the EMOTION of ANGER!

Our EMOTIONS don’t take the consequences of our actions in account, it just focuses on the then and now. We need to be SPIRITUALLY LED at ALL times, allowing God to lead us no MATTER what is going on.

So I say, LIVE by the SPIRIT, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want.
– Galatians 5:16-17

p.s
Dad, I totally forgive you and am sorry that I brought this up… I could of used an illustration of something that I did where I let my EMOTIONS get the best of me, but I thought it was more fun picking on you… I’m thinking I chose your story based more on EMOTIONS and not so much on the Spirit… ha ha, I need to work on that.

  1. Paul says:

Yes so true, a more artisticly gifted person with an inept gifting to be more easily ‘ in touch’ with his/her emotions, sometimes ‘feel’ their way through life. Although this is not limited to artists only.
And when we are born into God’s Spirit and filled with God’s Spirit, we have to learn to surrender our ’emotion- led ‘ personality and lifestyle to God’s Holy Spirit to be in charge and lead us. Because we are born naturally imbalanced because of sin, we can only become balanced and complete, by allowing Jesus to increase in us and reform us into the balanced personality of our creator.

And we really need to surrender to the Holy Spirit in us to teach us the difference between our emotions- ‘our feel- life’s voice’ and God’s voice. To believe that it is the Holy spirit speaking/directing us while it is actually our emotions is very dangerous as we can and mosr probbably will be led by what you also call ” emotional driven lusts” , while we believe it was the voice of God ‘allowing us’ such . Our minds need to be taught what is of God and what not from the Holy Spirit inspired book called the Holy Bible, and not what we ‘feel’ is o.k anymore.
