What does Beards, Books, and Church Planting have in common? Well, all of them are an investment of time, require patience to see through, and have something to do with WISDOM (making you look wiser, giving you wisdom, or requiring more wisdom).

So as we embark at the beginning stages of launching Restoration Church, I want to grow wiser while looking the part as well! Haha… no, it’s not a requirement to grow a beard to start a church, but maybe it should be!

The great evangelist, Charles Spurgeon, is quoted as saying “Growing a beard is a habit most natural, scriptural, manly, and beneficial”. Growing a beard is similar in the process that we will be facing when starting a church. It’s going to take time to grow, there will be naysayers in the process, there will be times where trimming becomes necessary, patience is key, and God is ultimately in CONTROL of the growth!

So during our first year of church planting, I will be growing out my beard. There will be times when I will be tempted to just shave it off, just as there will be times I’m sure where I will have doubts if I’m really suppose to be doing this church planting thing. The key as stated before is patience, letting God do the GROWING as we simply take care of what He provides.

Please don’t take this in the wrong way, I’m am no way comparing the IMPORTANCE & URGENCY of preaching the Gospel with that of growing a beard. But, there are similarities, as with anything that has beginnings and starts to grow. Plus, I’m thinking of the conversations that the beard will create. Like for instance: “Dude, are you trying out for a role on Duck Dynasty or something?” Which my response will be something like, “Duck Dynasty? nah, I’m just trying to be more like Jesus, grow a beard, and start a church… want to know more?”. Yea, so I’m thinking it will go something like that… just imagine, a great BEARDED revival!

Oh, and where does books play a part in all this? Well, the great Dr. Seuss states: “The MORE that you READ, the more THINGS you will KNOW. The MORE you LEARN, the more PLACES you’ll GO!”. It’s true, we need to be constant learners, the more we read the WISER we get!

With that said, I’m putting this out there… every month I’m challenging myself to read at least 1 book (besides the Bible of course… thank you Sunday School teachers for your concern) that will help me grow WISER in the area of Church Planting. If I don’t read at least 1 book by the end of the month, the beard will be gone. Hey, If I’m going to look wiser with an incredible beard, I need to actually be wiser. When it comes to starting a church, I will need ALL the WISDOM that I can get!

So, please hold me accountable to this!
